Why Use Leather?

Here at JUST HIDES, we understand the importance of protecting the environment and are committed to doing our part in protecting the environment. Animal welfare is crucial to our company and affects our decisions on where we get our hides from. Our hides come from animal-friendly farms and ranches. Our manufacturing process recycles water and uses solar energy during the manufacturing of our hides to further our eco-consciousness.

What is a leather alternative?

“Vegan Leather” has recently been a popular term in the leather community.  By saying “vegan,” people immediately think of green and healthy products, which is entirely misleading for consumers, and PU and PVC (Vinyl) are examples of “vegan leather.”

Let’s be honest, genuine, authentic leather is by far better for the environment than what they are calling “vegan leather.”  These vegan leather products are made from petroleum-based materials, the opposite of what “vegan” stands for.  During the manufacturing process of these alternatives, petroleum, chlorine, and other unnatural chemicals are used, which directly fuels negative climate change; making things worse, these vegan leathers or plastics take a long time to biodegrade in our landfills.

Is leather durable?

The durability of leather is unmatched by any synthetic like PU and PVC or “vegan leathers” when adequately cared for.  When leather is adequately treated, leather can be passed down for generations.  The life span of an average piece of leather furniture, adequately treated, could be twenty-five years or more. For example, one genuine leather couch can last as long as 2-3 couches made from “vegan leathers,” and that is a long time.

Leather wins the war on the mess that can accompany children and pet dander because leather is hypoallergenic.  In the cases of spills or animal hair on a leather couch, it is easily wiped off and cleaned. My favorite part is that leather does not trap any unwanted odors in its fibers.  Your guests will thank you later.

Is leather versatile?

When we think of how leather is used, most people think of car interiors. Leather can be used for so many different things.  For example, home interiors, boats, clothes, accessories, and even shoes.  According to “Love your leather,” the average consumer is wearing four leather products at any given time.  Some of the more popular leather accessories are wallets and purses. Think about how much leather was used in the movie Grease with all the leather jackets!

In your home, leather can be used on couches, of course, but also on things like cabinets, wall panels, mirrors, and even bookcases. Personally, I love the look of a nice leather finish on the top of a desk.  Another great place for leather is in our boats, where leather can exude luxury and comfort within the space.
