Have you ever wondered what leather has been used for throughout history? Some leather uses make sense, and others might seem a bit strange. Leather has been used to protect, add style, transport, and for leisure activities.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper made from leather is a Spanish invention dating back to the 1860s. Spain was known as the prominent place for high-quality leather for wallpaper. The purchase of leather wallpaper was a significant investment, and only the wealthiest people in Europe could afford this type of wall dressing.

At first glance, leather as wallpaper sounds strange, but it is an excellent insulator on walls. Leather retains warmth but still breathes, making it beneficial for keeping people warm in the winter. It also looks beautiful and exudes wealth, perfect for Europe’s elite.

Golf Balls

Around the mid-1400s, the first golf ball was made, but it was made mainly of wood. Only a few balls could be made at a time because of the time and cost. Leather was not used until “featheries” were used. Featheries, according to golfsupport.com, were made using cow or horse hides that were then stuffed with feathers. With the high cost to make and lengthy time, these golf balls came at a premium cost. The cost was not the main reason for a material change, but the durability was not sublime. Once the leather and feathers got wet, they were virtually useless, leaving golfers dissatisfied.

Fun fact:

According to golfsupport.com, the record distance for a featherie was more than 361 yards.

Boat Sails

As described by One4leather.com, Celtic tribes crafted imposing ships, and when the challenge of crossing the Atlantic presented itself, they used leather sails to get through the treacherous waters. Leather was often used to protect boats from the water. On Vikings’ boats, they would sleep on leather sleeping bags to protect them from the weather and dampness created by the water.

Church Doors

Leather has even covered church doors. They would be adorned with different designs or metal decorations. These decorations would add more aesthetics and add protection to the face of the doors. The leather used on them was thick and driven full of nails, according to MusseumOfLeatherCraft.org.

Fun Fact: According to blackstockleather.com, the Mare is a creature that would cause nightmares that came with the feeling of loss of breath or a crushing feeling on your chest. These feelings were because it would ride your chest while you sleep. It could take many forms, like a witch. This witch form would also steal your blood and energy. It was said that leather was used to protect against the Mare. Many people would use leather and found it effective in protecting against the Mare.
